Fugu

Two posts for one day?!?!  What?

So much happened yesterday (July 21) that I decided to break up the adventures into two posts.

After we got back from Osaka around 7pm, we were hungry, and our group of 8 set off looking for food.

Before I go further, let me start with a few things.  Number 1, we were going to have a hard time finding a restaurant that would be able to accommodate all 8 of us.  Japanese restaurants are very small.  Number 2, Dave, Tang's boss, had been wanting to try fugu on this trip to Japan.  Number 3, fugu is the Japanese dish of pufferfish.  Some of you have probably heard of it - this is the dish that if it is prepared incorrectly will kill you.  This is due to a tetrodotoxin in the fish.  Number 4, I, under no circumstances, was planning on or going to eat fugu while in Japan.

Number 5, I was very wrong....

Once seated, I was terrified.  I wasn't prepared to do this.  People died eating this fish!  You had to sign a waiver, right?  Again, I was wrong.

Yes, people die eating this fish but usually not at restaurants.  The chefs are highly trained, and the restaurants strictly regulated.  Most people who die from fugu are making it at home.  And no, we didn't have to sign waivers.

We ordered the fugu sashimi style (thin slices of raw fugu), deep fried, sushi style and in a hot pot (boiling broth is used to cook the fish and vegetables).  And everything was DELICIOUS!  After the first few bites and realizing I wasn't going to die, the dinner was amazing.  Fugu is a very sweet fish that is wonderful in all it's different forms.  And I would totally eat it again (but it is kind of expensive, so not often).

Also, the staff at this restaurant was so attentive and kind.  They brought us tea, showed us how to cook the hot pot and brought us dessert.  Our waiter was even kind enough to tell Tang and I where to buy a baseball hat before we leave town!  If you are ever in Kobe and up for trying fugu, do it!

Clockwise from top left: deep fried fugu, fugu sushi, hot pot with fugu and fugu sashimi.
