Dinner and Chateau du Versailles

Whew!  Such a long day with lots of walking!

We spent the whole day at the Palace of Versailles, which is huge!  But before that, I want to tell you about dinner last night!

Our Air B&B host left us a list of recommended restaurants in the area.  Last night, we went to Le Jardin d'en Face, which was fantastic!

The restaurant itself is fairly small, seating less than 30 people.  The food was hearty and warming, just what we wanted on a rainy night.  The menu consisted of several lamb, beef and veal dishes.  I got smoked duck with cheesy potatoes.  While the food was fantastic, what was more impressive was the restaurant was run by 2 people - the waitress and the chef.  One chef turned out 3 course meals for 26 people without missing a beat!  He was impressive.

The fantastic chef!

As I said earlier, we went to Versailles today.  The most surprising thing was the sheer size of the estate.  It isn't just the Chateau du Versailles and gardens.  There is also the Grand and Petit Trianon and those gardens.  The Grand Trianon is where the families of Napoleon and the second round of French kings (post French Revolution) lived, and the Petit Trianon is where Marie-Antoinette spent most of her time with her children.  Below are an assortment of pictures.  The fountains, unfortunately, were not on in the gardens, but the sculptures are still very impressive.

One of the many elaborate bedchambers - most had a pattern them and every surface - bed, chairs, carpet, wallpaper - was covered in the same pattern.
